Equestrian life at school: perseverance and the people beside us

Eques Trio and Ju Ching Chu Secondary School (Tuen Mun) brought Hong Kong team riders, a parent, a coach and a saddlery specialist together. A conversation about the equestrian world became a reflection on learning, commitment and the people who make progress possible.

A wider world, brought into school.

On 30 June 2026, Eques Trio joined the school’s careers and physical education teams for an equestrian industry sharing session. The conversation began with people: how they commit to training, make room for school, respond to setbacks and discover the work surrounding a sport.

Equestrian life brings together competition, care, teaching and specialist equipment. Hearing from several perspectives gave students a way to explore that wider world.

Team riders: finding a rhythm between training and school.

Two Hong Kong team riders shared their experience of balancing demanding training with life as students. Time, responsibility and commitment formed the heart of their conversation.

Their experience placed sporting ambition within everyday life. Whatever path a student may choose, learning how to sustain an interest is a valuable part of that journey.

A parent’s perspective: support through difficult moments.

A rider’s mother spoke about supporting her daughter through training, injury and setbacks. Her perspective brought the family behind the athlete into the conversation.

For students, this gave perseverance a human context. Progress often depends on understanding and encouragement from the people beside us.

The coach’s view: understanding the sport.

Experienced coach Yumi Toda introduced equestrian development in Hong Kong and the different competition disciplines. Questions invited students to reflect on what they had learned.

The coach’s perspective offered a starting point for students new to horses, and a direction for those curious to learn more.

Equipment as an invitation to explore.

Saddlery representative Stephanie used a quiz to introduce the functions of different pieces of equipment. The photographs capture students examining tack together, turning unfamiliar objects into questions and discoveries.

A sport is supported by many kinds of expertise, including equipment knowledge, fitting and service. This part of the session opened another perspective on careers and on the relationship between equipment, riding and the horse.

Let one encounter begin the next question.

We hope to bring the experience of riders, families and specialists to more young people. A school conversation can be a beginning: an introduction to horses and to how an interest grows through daily choices and support.

Our thanks go to Ju Ching Chu Secondary School (Tuen Mun) and all the guests who shared their experience. Eques Trio will continue connecting equestrian knowledge with education through programmes that give conversation room to continue.
